Rail and Transport

Mission-Critical DC Backup Power for Transport Infrastructure

Rail and highway infrastructure requires highly reliable DC standby systems capable of operating in electrically demanding and environmentally exposed locations. Our industrial VRLA AGM and Gel battery systems are engineered for deployment within rail signalling networks, points and crossings, traffic control systems, motorway gantries, tunnel safety systems and intelligent transport infrastructure.

These applications demand predictable float performance, stable discharge voltage, mechanical durability and long operational life with minimal maintenance intervention.

Electrical Engineering Characteristics

Our battery systems are configured for common infrastructure DC voltages including 24V, 48V, 110V and 125V systems. Units are available in 2V, 6V and 12V formats to support flexible series-parallel bank design.

Design life ranges from 10 to 15+ years (Eurobat classification dependent), with float voltage typically maintained between 2.25–2.30 V per cell at 20°C. Equalisation charging parameters and temperature compensation compatibility ensure optimal long-term performance in unmanned installations.

Low internal resistance supports voltage stability under load, particularly important for signalling electronics and communication equipment. High-rate discharge capability allows the batteries to support short-duration high-current events such as points motor actuation, while maintaining structural integrity across repeated duty cycles.

Environmental & Mechanical Design for Infrastructure Condition

Rail and roadside installations frequently experience vibration, temperature variation, humidity exposure and restricted ventilation. Our batteries utilise sealed VRLA recombination technology (greater than 99% gas recombination efficiency), eliminating the need for water topping and reducing routine maintenance.

Flame-retardant ABS casings compliant with UL94-V0 are available where project specifications require enhanced fire performance. Operating temperature ranges typically extend from –20°C to +50°C (model dependent), making them suitable for external trackside enclosures and roadside cabinets.

Internal plate construction is reinforced to improve vibration resistance, which is particularly important for trackside signalling huts and equipment cabinets positioned close to rail movement.

Rail Signalling & Interlocking Systems

Modern rail signalling systems rely on stable DC supplies to power relay circuits, electronic interlocking, axle counters and control processors. These systems are commonly configured at 110V or 125V DC and require autonomy periods ranging from 8 to 24 hours, depending on network classification and redundancy design.

Our battery banks are engineered for continuous float operation with rectifier/charger systems, delivering predictable discharge curves and stable voltage throughout the autonomy window. Front terminal configurations allow installation within racking systems in relay rooms and signalling locations where space efficiency and safe access are critical.

Points & Crossing Applications

Points motors impose intermittent but significant current demand during switching operations. Batteries supporting these systems must demonstrate high-rate discharge performance, low impedance and strong recharge acceptance.

AGM technology with thick plate construction and optimised grid design enables consistent short-duration high-load delivery while maintaining long-term structural reliability under repeated cycling. Mechanical resilience also supports installations subject to rail-induced vibration.

Road & Highway Infrastructure Applications

Traffic signal controllers typically operate on 24V or 48V DC systems and require sufficient autonomy to maintain junction safety during grid outages. In these environments, battery systems must combine rapid recharge characteristics with long float life and minimal servicing requirements.

Motorway gantries and variable message signs (VMS) rely on stable DC supply to support LED arrays, monitoring electronics and communications equipment. Medium-duration discharge capability, combined with temperature tolerance for outdoor cabinets, ensures operational continuity.

Tunnel safety systems—including emergency lighting, ventilation monitoring and communications—demand dependable standby performance aligned with regulated emergency duration standards. Battery reliability in these environments is critical due to limited maintenance access and elevated safety risk.

System Design & Engineering Support

We provide technical assistance to consultants, OEMs and infrastructure contractors in the specification and sizing of DC battery systems. This includes evaluation of continuous and peak load requirements, autonomy calculations, depth-of-discharge optimisation and charger compatibility review.

Series and parallel configuration guidance ensures correct system voltage and capacity, while lifecycle modelling helps forecast replacement intervals based on operating temperature and duty cycle.

Our approach supports integration into both new infrastructure projects and retrofit upgrades of legacy signalling or highway control systems.
